Hello! My name is Carter Gilbert, and I am the finance intern at Pulse. While I am very passionate about accounting and finance, I also have a creative side. I have a deep love of photography, and I particularly enjoy taking portraits of other people. Over the past couple years, I have been getting more and more familiar with 35mm film, and I now develop my own black and white film myself at home. Throughout the spring and summertime, I enjoy tending to my garden. God always seems to have something to teach me through all the seeds I plant and weeds I pull. Even though all that sounds very interesting, I do have a deep love and enthusiasm for accounting, and I am so thankful that God gave me the opportunity to exercise that enthusiasm at Pulse in this internship.
2.12.21 – Week 5
As the finance intern, I worked on closing out the month of January this past week. I also worked on various credit card reports and organized paperwork for the past couple of months. During my internship so far, I have had the opportunity to see first hand how a non-profit operates in its financial department. This has been very helpful in showing me how to practice my knowledge I have gained through school in my work.
2.19.21 – Week 6
This past week was a little bit crazy with the WiFi going out in the office. I had to figure out how to get some adapters to get the ethernet working on my laptop. After that was done, I continued to work as normally as possible until it was fixed. Because of this, all of the interns had to meet remotely on Tuesday. This was kind of a bummer because it has been so nice getting to know everyone face to face. There are a couple things that are beginning to become my responsibility which has kind of made me nervous, but I am fortunate to have an amazing supervisor who has come alongside me and helped me with anything I come across.
2.26.21 – Week 7
This past week all of the interns were able to come back into the office again. This was awesome, and we were able to have our first in-person workout together. Most of the other interns didn’t seem very excited, but I tried to have fun with it. We ran down to US Bank Stadium and ran up some stairs. Mark said that it wasn’t a competition, which obviously meant that it was a competition. Later that night, we got to host the livestream for Revival Nights. It was kind of awkward watching myself on the screen, but the night went amazingly well. A couple of my friends were watching and kept on texting me about how much they enjoyed it. That just got me so excited for future events and how God is working through Pulse.
3.5.21 – Week 8
This past week for finance work we were getting ready to complete our month close reports for the next week, so there wasn’t a whole bunch going on in that department. With the other interns, we had another workout together where we got to do relay races in the wet grass. I was one of the few people who didn’t wipe out, but I was pretty close. That night we also had our Preach Twin Cities event. I hadn’t really helped with this event, but I sat in on the livestream. It was so amazing to hear all of these different preachers and how they chose to share the Gospel. That night was really powerful. This past week for finance work we were getting ready to complete our month close reports for the next week, so there wasn’t a whole bunch going on in that department. 3.12.21 – Week 9
This past week I was on spring break, so I was able to work some longer days. This allowed me to work on all of the month’s close financial processes. This included reconciling our bank accounts, completing credit card statements, and organizing paperwork. This was the first time I had to do most of it myself. I had a lot of questions to ask because there was still a lot to learn. While I was working on the month close processes, I took lots of notes and made sure to remember because I will have to do more of it myself next month. It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed getting to see more of Pulse’s financial processes and being able to apply all of my knowledge to my job.
3.19.21 – Week 10
This week was not anything particularly exciting. Besides working on the typical check requests, I was able to really plow through this budget project I had been working on for a while. I had to go into our system and update the past budgets to match the actual expenses. It was a tedious and not very interesting project, but I was satisfied in seeing it get completed.
3.26.21 – Week 11
This week was another Revival Night! I got to help fill up the baptism tub and that whole situation which was a good time. These days are always just a good time to really bond with the other interns. Even though we were all arguing about whether or not pineapple goes on pizza, we still find a way to get along with one another. When it came to my finance work, I got started on the dashboard. This is a huge excel file that we have to update every month with the month’s financials.
4.2.21 – Week 12
This week was kind of insane. On the finance side, I had to set the deadline for the credit card reports. Once we got the statement in, I had to format the reports and send them out to everyone so they could complete them by the deadline. Then on Friday, everyone had to come to the office to help with Good Friday response. This night was long, but it went by a lot faster than I expected. We all got to hang out, play ping pong, and rejoice at how many people were responding to the gospel.
4.9.21 – Week 13
This week I got started on the monthly close process for March. I got started on completing all of the credit card reports for the month. Along with that, I also got started on a couple more reports like the bank balances report and other reconciliations we have to do at the end of the month. I was very excited to get started on the monthly close process myself.
4.16.21 – Week 14
This week I finished up all of the credit card reports. I then went on to work on the dashboard and reformatting some financial reports. There were just a lot of tiny tedious projects I had to work on this week, but I have a lot of fun working on them. Messing around in excel and making spreadsheets look nice is very satisfying to me.
4.23.21 – Week 15
This week I had to send out the deadline for the April credit card reports. We were going to be getting the statements the following week, so I was making sure to get it on everyone’s calendar. I also spent some time working on the dashboard for March. This report is very tedious and takes a lot of time to make sure there aren’t any errors. That Sunday a couple of the interns went over to Acebe’s house for dinner. To put it simply, I laughed the hardest that I have ever laughed.
4.30.21 – Week 16
This week we had the intern showcase. I was honestly kind of nervous because I didn’t know what to do as the finance intern. There is a lot of confidential information that I can’t share. I made a very last-minute PowerPoint, but it ended up working really nice. Mark did interrupt me while I was speaking, but I got to poke fun at him. Everyone had a good laugh about it, and this was definitely the highlight of my week.
